DR. RAMON V. ARCENAS RHINOLOGY RESEARCH CONTEST

A. GENERAL RULES
  1. This contest aims to stimulate research interest in the fields of Rhinology, Smell, and Skull Base Surgery.
  2. The contest is open to ALL interested ORL-HNS trainees, board-eligible, Diplomates, and Fellows of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.
  3. There is NO LIMIT as to the number of entries a participant may submit.
  4. The research must have been made in the past three (3) years.
  5. Papers submitted must not have won any prize in any National or International Scientific Paper Contest nor been published/accepted for publication/submitted for publication anywhere else. Papers that were presented, either oral or poster, but otherwise not published/accepted for publication/submitted for publication are eligible. A statement attesting to the same shall also be uploaded to the submission portal.
  6. Eligible research papers are those with any of the following research designs:
    1. Descriptive studies – studies without comparison groups
      1.  Case series
      2. Observational descriptive studies (cross-sectional studies & surveys)
    2. Analytical studies – studies with comparison groups
      1. Observational analytic studies (cohort and case control studies)
      2. Experimental Studies
      3. Quasi-experimental studies
  7. The winners will receive certificates and cash prizes as follows:
    1. 1st Prize Php 30,000
    2. 2nd Prize Php 20,000
    3. 3rd Prize Php 10,000
  8. Papers will be pre-screened, and qualifying papers will be presented during the 69th PSOHNS Annual Convention: “Breathing Better, Living Better: Advances in Rhinology, Smell, Skull Base and Sleep Surgery” to be held in Space at One Ayala, Makati City on December 3, 2025, from 7:00-8:30AM.
  9. The Dr. Ramon V. Arcenas Rhinology Research Contest will not push through if there are less than 5 official entries. To be considered official, the author/representative must duly register and pay for the convention and comply with the submission requirements of the manuscript.
  10. These rules and regulations may be modified from time to time upon the approval of the Research Committee.
  11. All papers automatically become the property of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery (PSOHNS) and may not be published elsewhere without approval of the PSOHNS through PAR. Winning papers will be submitted to the Philippine Journal of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (PJOHNS).
  12. Non-winning papers may still be considered for publication pending the approval of the editor of PJOHNS

B. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Manuscripts are neatly prepared in correct U.S. English using Microsoft Word on A4 format in Times New Roman font size 12, double spaced, with a 1-inch margin on all sides. When necessary, the manuscript should employ italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses).
  2. A maximum of twenty (20) pages (for original articles) is allowed for text, with one (1) additional page each for proposed algorithms, figures or tables.
  3. A maximum of twenty (20) references is allowed.
  4. If the MS Word “Track Changes” tool has been used in manuscript preparation, all changes in the document have been accepted and the “Track Changes” feature has been turned off before submission.
  5. Manuscripts are correctly ordered as follows:
    1. Title page
    2. Abstract including keywords and laymanized version
    3. Text – introduction, methods, results, discussion
    4. Acknowledgements
    5. References
    6. Tables
    7. Figure legends and
    8. Individual figures (each attached separately in .jpeg format).
      *The pages of the manuscript are numbered consecutively, beginning with the title page as page one.
  6. Save manuscript as follows: LAST NAME, FIRST NAME INITIALS (eg. DELA CRUZ, J)
  7. Proof of IRB review and/or clearance
  8. Filled out PJOHNS Author declaration form(s). Form can be accessed through:

C. MECHANICS

  1. Deadline of submission of manuscripts and accompanying requirements (IRB review and/or clearance, Author Declaration form, and Attestation of Non-Presentation/NonPublication form) is on October 31, 2025 via the Google form link above
  2. The final five (5) papers will be chosen by the screening committee. The finalist papers will be sent to the appointed Board of Judges. The Criteria for pre-judging are:
    Significance or relevance of the study20%
    Methodologic rigor20%
    Discussion and Conclusions20%
    Originality5%
    Medical journalism5%
    Subtotal:70%
  3. Announcement of the finalists will be on November 20, 2025.
D. PRESENTATION GUIDELINES
  1. Official PowerPoint presentation to be used by the finalists must be submitted to the Secretariat (Function Room A) during the Annual Convention by December 2, 2025 5:00PM. A USB will be provided but participant may opt to bring their own for transfer purposes. Computer to be used will be a Mac OSX system.

    NOTE: Non-submission of PowerPoint presentation within the set deadline will merit automatic disqualification.
  2. Actual Scientific Research Paper Presentation of the finalists is tentatively set on December 3, 2025, 7:00-8:30AM. The oral presentation will comprise 30% of the final score. The criteria for the actual paper presentation are:
    Manner of presentation 15%
    Quality of responses to the Q&A 10%
    Visual aids 5%
    Subtotal: 30%
  3. Presentation is seven (7) minutes. Each of the judges may ask two (2) questions each. The decision of the judges is final and irrevocable.

E. FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THE SUBMISSION GUIDELINES WILL MERIT AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION.
