MECHANICS OF THE RHINOLOGY QUIZ BEE FOR THE 69TH PSO-HNS ANNUAL CONVENTION
TITLE: “MUST NOSE”
A. GENERAL OVERVIEW
- The Rhinology Quiz Bee is an event to be hosted by the Philippine Academy of Rhinology (PAR) during the 69th PSO-HNS Annual Convention to be held on December 4, 2025 from 7:00-8:30AM, Hall A, Space at One Ayala, Makati City.
***Call time for participants will be at 6:40AM - The Rhinology Quiz Bee is open to all ORL-HNS Residents of Accredited Training Programs of the Philippine Board of Otolaryngology – Head & Neck Surgery.
- The goal of the Rhinology Quiz Bee is to test the basic knowledge of ORL-HNS residents in the fields of Rhinology, Smell, and Skull Base Surgery; to foster teamwork amongst colleagues, and enhance relations among the different training institutions.
- Non-competing ORL-HNS residents/trainees and consultants of the different training institutions are encouraged to attend the event in support of the contestants.
B. GUIDELINES
- All Rhinology Quiz Bee participants are strictly prohibited from using electronic gadgets throughout the duration of the quiz. These include laptops, tablets, smart phones, and smart watches and the like.
- Coaching from the audience or non-participants is strictly prohibited.
- Violation of the rules will result in disqualification and elimination from the competition.
- Decisions made by the judges will be final and irrevocable.
- A cash prize of Php 15,000 and trophy will be awarded to the champions, while certificates and cash prizes of Php 10,000, Php 5,000 will be given to the 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
C. SCOPE AND COVERAGE
- The Quiz Bee questions shall cover basic, clinical, and trivia questions in Rhinology, Smell, and Skull Base topics.
- References shall include Cummings, EPOS, ARIA, Middleton’s Allergy, and other verifiable extended reading materials and multimedia resources in Rhinology, Smell, and Skull Base topics.
D. MECHANICS OF QUIZ BEE
- Each participating training institution must form a team of a maximum of (4) residents (Ideally, 1 resident per year level). For departments who can only field 1-3 residents, they can still join.
- In the event that a training institution has incomplete year levels, it is at the discretion of the institution to send representatives even more than 1 in a year level so long as only a maximum of (1) fourth year resident can join the team and does not exceed 4 residents. Please provide us the list of the official representatives of your team/institution by November 15, 2025 (Saturday) by filling up the Google form through this link: https://tinyurl.com/joinrhinoquizbee or you may scan the QR code at the bottom of the page. PAR shall vet the participants to ensure fairness and equity.
- Role of Quiz Master:
- He/she is responsible for asking questions, moderating the quiz bee and providing answers.
- He/she is responsible in settling disputes throughout the competition in coordination with the Board of Judges.
- Philippine Academy of Rhinology (PAR) members will be assigned to serve as proctors during the event.
- Questions will be multiple choice and/or identification type.
- All materials such as the buzzer, bond papers, and markers, will be provided by the organizing committee.
- Quiz Proper
- There will be (3) rounds with 5 questions per round:
- 1st Round: Easy (1 point each)
- 2nd Round: Moderate (2 points each)
- 3rd Round: Difficult (3 points each)
- Tie breaker questions: Difficult (1 point)***
- There will be (3) rounds with 5 questions per round:
- A question’s time limit shall depend on the difficulty level:
- Easy round – 15 seconds
- Moderate round – 30 seconds
- Difficult round – 45 seconds
- The Quiz Master shall read the question twice. Beyond that, THERE SHALL BE NO REPETITION OF THE READING OF QUESTIONS.
- All answers must be written legibly, in ALL CAPITAL LETTERS on the paper provided. Incorrect spelling will be marked wrong.
- Once the Quiz Master says “STOP”, all participants must:
- Stop writing and put down their pen
- Raise their paper with their written answers overhead, facing their designated proctor.
- The Quiz Master will provide the correct answer, to be flashed on the screen.
- Each designated proctor shall collect and verify their assigned team’s answers.
- Any protests or appeals regarding the preceding question will be entertained before the quizmaster proceeds to the next question.
- After the DIFFICULT ROUND, the total number of points will be tallied and the teams with the 3 highest scores to garner 1st, 2nd and 3rd place respectively.
- In case 2 or more teams have the same number of points, tie-breaking questions shall be given one at a time until only 1 team is able to answer the question correctly, and will be declared the winner.
- The board of judges shall deliberate on all matters regarding the quiz bee. Their decision is final.
